How to Become a Fashion Blogger
How exactly can you become a fashion influencer blogger in 2023?
Is it too late to start a blog?
Do you dream about having your own platform for sharing your love for fashion with others? Maybe you are sick of working your 9-5 job, or just want to earn a little extra cash on the side. Whatever reason you are here, it’s because you are curious about how to become a fashion influencer or blogger.
Some may say blogs are outdated, but it is not too late to start your own blog! There are new accounts flourishing every single day. Especially in the fashion world.
Unfortunately, social media has made us believe that blogs are no longer relevant. Social media has given us the illusion that influencer bloggers can ONLY become successful on a social platform. More on that later.
What is a Fashion Influencer Blogger?
A fashion influencer blogger is someone who shares fashion related content with an audience on the internet.
Fashion influencers typically share outfit inspiration, product reviews, and style tips. The content provides value to their audience and usually focuses on a specific niche.
What is a niche? Every fashion blog has one! It is the category or subcategory of fashion that is the primary topic of content on the blog. Some examples in the fashion industry include: workwear for petites, affordable fashion for women in their 30’s (hi! it’s me!), athleisure wear for moms, etc.
What is great about a fashion blog is that it can work for literally any style. Regardless of your niche, there will be people searching for inspiration in that particular style.
Social Media v. Blogs
With social platforms like TikTok and Instagram, why would anyone waste time writing a blog?
The answer: you do not own your social media account.
Here me out, social media is a powerful tool for bloggers. However, it should not be your ONLY platform. Having a blog with email subscribers (devoted followers of YOUR site) is the difference between owning and renting your platform.
At any time, social media platforms can change, update the algorithm, or even completely disappear.
Remember the major Instagram glitch of 2022? Though it was temporary, this left influencers in a panic. Imagine losing contact with followers and being unable to share income generating content.
This is why a blog is crucial. It provides a platform that YOU are in control of.
The traffic, the monetization, the content, everything on the blog is YOURS. Think of social media as a tool used to drive your niche audience to your blog.
5 Benefits of a Blog
For influencers, having a blog with quality content and subscribers will set you apart in a very saturated industry.
Why? The continuously discoverable nature of long-form, quality blog posts adds value to YOU. A blog can increase your authority, credibility, and value you offer to not only your audience, but to brands as well.
Here are 5 benefits of having a blog:
- Posts are searchable for years (primarily via the blog site, Google, and Pinterest)
- Provides alternative options for content monetization
- Continuous exposure with with optimization of SEO
- You are in control of the platform (traffic, content, monetization, appearance, etc.)
- Growth potential with proper use of social media
It’s no secret that brands pay influencers to post on social media. You automatically increase your value to brands when you can also offer brands a coveted post on your blog.
Unlike a social media posts, that can lose visibility quickly, blog posts have long-term discoverability. The same long-term discovery, often through SEO, will also increase your exposure to new audience and drive new traffic to your site.
With a blog, you are in control and you can choose how to monetize content, generate traffic, and more! It is the foundation to becoming a fashion influencer blogger. You have the power to utilize social media (or not) to nurture your audience and drive traffic to your content.
Why A Blog Matters
Blog content is not temporary.
That is, of course, totally in your control… because you could technically delete your own content whenever you please…
Like I said before, social media posts often lose visibility in a matter of hours or days. That is why you have to CONSTANTLY post to get engagement on social media. Blog posts, on the other hand, are discoverable forever thanks to search engines like Pinterest and Google.
It is important to remember, the QUALITY of blog post is key to longevity. Rather than treating a blog like a diary, it should be a valuable resource for your niche audience. What are they gaining from your posts? Do you provide solutions to their FAQ? Quality posts are important in establishing your authority with not only your niche audience, but also with search engines. This will allow you to be more discoverable, attract new followers to your blog, and provide you an opportunity to be an influence to others in your area of expertise.
Once they find your blog, they’ll probably want to follow you on social platforms. Social media is then where you can nurture your blog audience.
Set Up Your Fashion Blog for Success
It is clear that blogs are essential to becoming a fashion influencer. However, the whole process of getting started can be intimidating. There are a few things you need to know in order to become a fashion blogger influencer. Here are 5 basics to keep in mind as you get started:
1. You need a platform (a blog site and 1-2 social channels)
This might seem obvious at this point, but this will be the first place to start. To share content and grow your audience a platform is essential.
After you have a blog (I’ll share a detailed step-by-step startup guide soon!), choose 1-2 social platforms where you’ll share blog content and nurture your audience. Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube are the most popular among fashion influencers.
With every blog post, you should share the post on all of your active social platforms and Pinterest. Always directing readers back to your blog. The blog is where you provide the most valuable content and have an opt in form for email subscription.
2. Pick Your Blog Name & Niche
Name and niche go hand in hand. Choose a name that clearly identifies your niche and will attract your ideal audience.
Your niche is the primary subject of your blog content. A lot of new bloggers shy away from a niche out of fear that they can’t post about anything else.
The truth is, after you have set the foundation of your blog with several niche articles, you can branch out to other topics as well that might also be of interest to your audience.
Creating a foundation on your blog of several niche articles will tell search engines what your site is about. This is key to contributing to your site ranking via SEO. Remember, it is all about long-term visibility and making your content a valuable research.
Social media is where fashion bloggers often branch out into other content categories. Home decor, travel, fitness, and beauty are popular topic fashion influencers cover on social. This gives an opportunity to nurture and connect with your audience on other topics.
3. Create Helpful Content
Your focus should be providing a valuable resource to your readers. This is key to attracting traffic to your site.
From my personal experience, keyword research and SEO (search engine optimization) has played a critical role in increasing traffic to this blog.
Sure, I could share the latest deals and “affordable finds”, but that doesn’t provide long term value to my audience. Deals fade and products sell out. I wanted to become a resource for the followers and answer style question.
4. Decide How You Will Monetize
Fashion blogs, like any other blog, have several monetization options Here are a few popular choices.
- Affiliate Marketing
- Brand Deals or Sponsored Posts
- Advertisments
- Digital Products
- Selling Services (personal shopper, personal stylist, style coach, etc.)
- Providing a membership
- Online courses
Affiliate marketing is the most popular monetization form for fashion bloggers and influencers.
Here’s how it works. You post an outfit on your blog or social media and link all of the products via affiliate links.
Generally, when someone clicks on a product link and buys an item you get a commission from it. Usually, it is a very small commission but it will add up over time.
5. Post Consistently
Posting valuable content consistently is key to growing your blog, especially if you are just starting out.
When a new post is live on your blog, remember to share it on social media with a link back to your blog post.
As your traffic grows, you’ll want to have an email opt in form on the blog. Once you have a list of subscribers, you’ll now be able to communicate directly with your most devoted audience.
This is your opportunity to provide notification of new blog posts, get feedback from readers, and share additional content with your readers.
